As an alternative to soap and micellar waters, this recipe of micellar oil is milder than a soap. If you haven’t tested yet, you should really give it a try !
A micellar oil cleanses the face skin, but more mildly than any soap. It works by solubilizing the skin impurities and sebum. It is weakly detergent thanks to its low concentration in tensioactive.
And it is pleasant to use because it leaves a thin lipidic protecting film on the skin,
Another advantage, as alternative to micellar waters (having a short shelf-life), it can be stored for several months.
The vegetable oil will solublize the organic compounds (sebum, pollution, bacteria, etc.). You can use whatever oil you have, but prefer one that is penetrating, for example sweet almond, jojoba, apricot kernel oils…
Sulfated castor oil is the detergent, it is soluble in both the oil and water, so it will deeply clean the skin, without leaving the skin oily. Sulfatation is a chemical modification so this ingredient is not natural. I haven’t tried 100% natural alternatives yet, I will try soy lecithin and saponins.
Salt and lemon juice are both preservatives and cicatrizing agents. Here is the recipe:
Amounts are masses expressed as %. For 100g product, use 70g (or 88 mL) vegetable oil.
Essentials are not necessary in this recipe, as they will be rinsed out right after application, what a waste it would be ! In addition, they may enter in contact with the eyes, and many are irritating.
How to store it?
As it’s an oil, it need to be kept away from the daylight, as much as possible ! For example in an amber glass flask (brown). Indeed, oils first degrade by autoxydating, which generates unpleasant rancid smells.
To help, you can add antioxydants, such as tocopherols extracted from citrus fruits. They are commercially available, sometimes under the name “Vitamin E” (amount recommanded: 0.1% ~ 4 drops / 100g product).
- Mix the vegetable oil with the sulfated castor oil
- Separately, press a fresh lemon and get roughly 2mL / 2g and add the salt. Mix both to solubilize the salt
- Pour it into your flask, and stir vigourously
